Recently hip fracture is becoming an increasingly important health problem of elderly. We investigated the prognosis of hip fractures. Four hundred and seventy-four female patients with hip-fracture (8th decade 221; and 9th decade 253) were studied to estimate their activity at the time of their discharge and to delineate the relation between hip fracture and mental disorder of elderly. Five hundred and seventeen hip-fracture patients (male 131, age 41-94 years old, average 68.9, female 386, age 43-100 years old, average 78.8) were followed up for 1 to 4 years after suffering hip fractures to calculate the mortality from hip fracture. As a result only about 36% of trochanteric fractured women of the 9th decade could walk with or without crutches or canes at the time of their discharge. Mental disorder of elderly seemed to be related to suffering hip fractures. The mortality is 11.5% for men and 11.7% for women. Average life span after injury is 9.6 and 15.2 months for men and women respectively.
