A Roentgenographic Study of Bone Fragments in Knee Joint Trauma.

We studied the initial roentgenograms of 84 knee traumas. Their final diagnoses were 52 ligamentous avulsion fractures and 29 osteochondral fractures. Bone fragments were classified according to their positions in the roentgenograms as follows:The AP view: zones 1-3: the medial, intercondylar, and lateral parts of the tibiofemoral joint. zone 4: the patellar and parapatellar parts. The lateral view: zones 1-3: the anterior, central, and posterior parts of the tibiofemoral joint. zone 4: the patellofemoral joiot. zone 5: the femoral condylar part. The axial view: zones 1-3: the medial, patellofemoral, and lateral parts.We found 12 atypical cases. For example, osteochondral fragments had sometimes been misdiagnosed initially, because they were very mobile. For a correct initial diagnosis, we confirmed that it is necessary to consider additional views, adequate voltage, an enlarged view, the patient's age, and the causes of the injury.
