Conservative Treatment of Avulsion Fractures of the Cruciate Ligaments with Kyuro Knee Bracing.

Immobilization is usually maintained for nearly six weeks in the case of an avulsion fracture of the cruciate ligaments. The purpose of this paper is to shorten the period of immobilization using a Kyuro knee brace with a traction system. Acute avulsion fractures of the ACL in four patients and of the PCL in another three patients were allowed to heal without surgery. Four were children and three were aged. For the fracture of the ACL in children, the injured knee was mobilized with a brace after a three-week-immobilization period. For the fracture of the ACL in the aged and of the PCL in any generation, the knee was mobilized with the brace after less than ten days' immobilization. Static stability of the knee was achieved in six of the seven patients, and full range of knee motion in six of the seven patients. The present study confirmed that protective motion with bracing was useful to shorten the period of immobilization in acute avulsion fractures of the cruciate ligaments.
