This study investigated the correlation between lateral thrust of the knee joint and several parameters which are thought to influence the osteoarthritic knee. The degree of thrust was estimated applying the accelerometric technique. Fifty-eiqht osteoarthritic knees of 35 patients were studied with regard to height, weight, BMI (body mass index), osteoarthritic changes on roen tgenograms, difference of lateral joint opening angle of knee between an upright position and supine, and the point at the tibial plateau where the mechanical axis passes in a standing position. The latter two parameters on roentgenograms correlated with the degree of acceleration of osteoarthritic knee by multivariate statistical analysis, with correlation coefficients of 0.39 and -0.38 respectively. The results suggest that the accelerometric technique evaluates the lateral thrust of the knee joint quantitatively.
