Roentgenological studies into the motion of the dual bearing hip prosthesis with a self-centering mechanism under non-weight-bearing conditions have reported that the inner head moves mainly during primary hip motion after which the main movement is in the outer head. We compared the motion ranges under weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing conditions of 19 prostheses using a roentgenoscope and video taperecorder. Under non-weight-bearing, 84% of the prostheses moved mainly between the inner and outer head. But under weight-bearing, almost all of the prostheses moved mainly between the outer head and acetabulum. This phenemenon occured because of the self-centering mechanism.
