By the application of critical electrolyte concentration theory to histochemical system, it was undertaken to differentiate in tissue sections between chondroitin 4-sulfate and chondroitin 6-sulfate. In model experiments, the critical electrolyte concentration of chondroitin 4-sulfate differed from that of chondroitin 6-sulfate when aluminium, zirconium or calcium was used as an electrolyte. Histological experiments showed a similar pattern of critical electrolyte concentration to that in the model experiments.
