Studies on hepatic dysfunction in 148 renal-transplant recipients.

Hepatic dysfunction following renal transplantation was studied in 213 allograft recipients.<BR>The incidence of hepatic dysfunction was 148 out of 213 cases (69%). Eighty-four (56%) out of 148 cases had the transit elevation of transaminase levels within 1-2 months after transplantation, which might be related with the medication of high dose of immunosuppressants.<BR>Of 41 cases who had persistent hepatic dysfunction after transplantation, 4 cases (9%) died of submassive hepatic necrosis, which might be related with the reactivation of hepatitis virus under the immunosuppressed status. One case became HBV carrier after the primary infection of HBV following transplantation.<BR>Of 23 cases who had hepatic dysfunction before transplantation, there were 7 cases (30%) in which transaminase levels were subsequently normalized and 2 cases (9%) in which hepatic morphological findings were improved after transplantation.<BR>A HBsAg negative patient without liver cirrhosis developed hepatocellular carcinoma 4 years after transplantation.
