An Immunohistochemichal Study of Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumors by a Novel Marker (Schwann/2E Antibody) of Schwann Cells and Myelin of the Peripheral Nervous System.

Peripheral nerve sheath tumors consisting of 92 schwannomas, 6 malignant schwannomas, 12 neurofibromas, and 3 traumatic neurofibromas, were examined immnohistochemichally by using the Schwann/ 2E antibody which specifically immunostains Schwann cells and myelin of the peripheral nervous system. The Peripheral nerve sheath tumors including 92 cases of schwannomas, 6 malignant schwannomas, 12 neurofibromas, and 3 traumatic neurofibromas, were examined immnohistochemichally using the Schwann/2E antibody which specifically immunostains Schwann cells and myelin of the peripheral nervous system. The Schwann/2E immunoreactivity was detected in 78% of the schwannomas. More than 1/3 of the tumor cells were immunostained in 37% of the schwannomas. All of the malignant schwannomas and neurofibromas were Schwann/2E negative. In traumatic neuromas, most of the proliferating cells were immunostained. These findings demonstrated that the Schwann/2E antibody is useful for the pathological study of peripheral nerve sheath tumors.
