Assessment of five-year survivors with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma treated by transcatheter arterial embolization(TAE) combined with Lipiodol.

Eight patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who survived over five years after transcatheter arterial embolization with Lipiodol (Lp-TAE) were studied. All of them had nodular type HCC without invasion of the first or second branches of the portal vein on the angiogram. These patients (group I) were compared with 17 other patients with the same tumor type and extent of potal invasion who survived less than two years after Lp-TAE (group II). The serum AFP positive rate was significantly higher in group II whereas the other clinical and tumor-related factors revealed no statistical difference between the two groups. The average interval of Lp-TAE in group I was statistically longer than that in group II. On the plain radiograph after Lp-TAE, the patients with homogeneous intra-tumoral Lipiodol retention received significantly better prognosis than the patients with inhomogeneous, tumor-vessel-like Lipiodol retention.
