Immunohistochemical study on p53, HSP72 overexpression and PCNA LI in human hepatocellular carcinomas from the view point of biological malignant potentials.

Immunohistochemical study was done on fifty cases of the resected hepatocellular carcinomas (HCCs) tissue section with anti-p 53, anti-HSP72 and anti-PCNA rnonoclonal antibody. <BR>Positive nuclear staining was found in 11/50 (22%) stained with anti-p 53 and in 23/50 (46%) with anti-HSP72 antibody. The tumor sizes of all cases of p 53 and HSP72 overexpession were more than 2cm in diameter. Positive rate of p 53 overexpression was significantly higher in patients with moderately and poorly differentiated type HCCs comparing with well differentiated ones (p<0.05). The vp-positive group showed significantly higher positive rate of p 53 overxpression than that of negative group (p<0.05). HSP72 overexpression was highly positive in patients with moderately and poorly differentiated HCCs or recurrent HCCs. Furthermore, 10 out of 11 cases (90.9%) of p 53 overexpression were significantly correlated with HSP72 averexpression (p<0.01). PCNA LI of HCCs were significantiy higher in patients with liver cirrhosis, high serum AFP level (p<0.05), fc-inf positive growth, massive type and single nodular type with proliferation into surounding area (p<0.01). However, no correlation was found with PCNA LI and p 53 overexpression, or PCNA LI and HSP72 overexpression.<BR>These results suggest that p 53, HSP72 overexpression and PCNA LI play a crucial role on the evaluatian af biological characteristics of the malignant patentiais in human HCCs.
