The Second-stage Analysis on the Results of Mass Screening for Large Bowel Cancer.

In April 1990, we began to conduct the mass screening for the detection of large bowel cancer using a one-day method of immunologic occult fecal blood test and a questionnaire concerning the complaints of the subjects examined, and published the results of first-stage analysis in this journal. We continued the mass screening using the same procedures through 1991, and described the results of second-stage analysis in the present article.<BR>A total of 4, 555 inhabitants in Makurazaki and Bhonotsu areas in Kagoshima Prefecture were examined, and 3, 211 of them (70.5%) were subjected to the current analysis. 1, 211 (38.0%) were assessed positive for cancer, and 345 of them (28.3%) underwent detailed examinations such as digital examination, sigmoidoscopy, and barium meal enema. Large bowel cancer was found in 19 cases (double cancers in one case), which corresponded to 0.6 of the subjects having undergone initial examinations. Fecal occult blood test was positive in 18 cases, and only one case was taken up due to the questionnaire alone. The results indicated that proper application of fecal occult blood test is of crucial importance to detect efficiently large bowel cancer.
