Expression of oncogene products in colon cancer, adenoma and adjacent mucosa.

The expression of oncogene products (EGF, TGF-β, erbB-2, ras p 21 and c-myc) in colon cancer (advanced colon cancer and early flat colon cancer), adenoma and adjacent colon epithelia was determined by immuno-histochemical staining on paraffin embedded serial sections. Expression of these products was graded according to staining intensity and an area of positively stained cells. In comparison to adenoma, all of these gene products except ras p 21 were detected with higher frequency in cancer. Ras p 21 and erb-B2 were detected with higher frequency in the normal-appearing mucosa adjacent to advanced cancer. Gene products were deterted with higher frequency both in cancer and in adenoma, but the tendency of multi-expression was more marked found in invasive portion of advanced cancer than in non invasive cancer or in adenoma. These findings suggest that activation of plural oncogenes may be required for human colon carcinogenesis.
