Scanning electron microscopic studies of colorectal cancer.

Superficial structures of human coloretal cancer were studied by magnifier colonofiber-scope and stereo-microscope for three dimensional low power view and scanning electron microscope (SEM) for high power in the recent decade. Superficial observation in 68 cases of colonic cancer, 46 cases of rectal cancer and normal 150 cases were performed chiefly by SEM.<BR>Patterns of superficial observation in cancer by SEM were classified into 6 types with reference to the classification of stereo-microscope and magnifier colonofiber-scope.<BR>They were as follows ; type 1-the simple type 3 cases (2.6%), type 2-the type of large crypt orifice 14 cases (12.3%), type 3-the type of giant crypt orifice 8 cases (7%), type 4-cerebral type 18 cases (15.8%), type 5-mixed type 63 caces (55.3%) and type 6-unclassified type 8 cases (7%), Diagnosis of malignancy could with existence of severe changes of type 3-6, especially giant crypt orifice, but not in type 1-2.<BR>The microvilli were classified by SEM as flows, type 1-variable and scattered type with tip swelling, type 2-irregular and long type, type 3-the type like erecting throns, type4-bending type covering cancer cells, type 5-mild degree of change or normal type.<BR>It is significant for diagnosis of malignancy by the existence of type 1-4.
