The effect of rate of freezing or thawing upon the frost injury was examined. It was observed that the degree of inijury was exaggerated by rapid freezing or thawing not only in the winter hardy tea leaves but also in the young leaves of new shoots.<BR>The injury was larger also when the leaf surface was wet with dew. But the difference of injury by rate of thawing was rather small, so it is suggested that the reason why the injury is larger at the east side of tea bushes is mainly due to the difference of freezing temperature and its duration, and the rate of thawing must be a rather minor factor.
