In screenings of bioactive components in edible and medicinal plants, we found that bay leaf (Laurus nobilis L., 2% powdered feed, for 7 d) and its component, costunolide (50-200 mg/kg/d, for 5 d, orally) had a dose-dependent inductive effect on mouse liver glutathione S-transferase (EC 2.5.1.18, Phase II enzyme). Since costunolide is a phase II enzyme-inducer responsible for the detoxification of xenobiotics, and since it is a major component in bay leaves, an additional merit of bay leaf may be considered as a possible cancer chemopreventor.
