Callus tissues were induced from the stem of male and female of Humulus lupulus L. (Moraceae" in Murashige and Skoog basal medium supplemented with 0.1 ppm of kinetin, 5.0 ppm of 2,4-D, 3% of sucrose and 0.8% of agar. Hop callus generally grow vigorously under the induction conditions. The growth rate of hop callus became slower as the concentration of 2,4-D in the medium decreased, while the amount of organic solvent-soluble fraction increased. Bitter taste was not perceived in any of the hop callus cultured under those conditions. In the chloroform extract of hop callus was confirmed the presence of 5α-ergostan-3-one, 5α-stigmastan-3-one, friedelin, campesterol, stigmasterol, β-sitosterol, oleanolic acid, ursolic acid and hederagenin. The data of GG and MS suggested the presence of 5α-stigmast-22-en-3-one, a ursene-type hederagenin, maslinic acid and 3-epimaslinic acid.
