Quantitative determination of five quarternary protoberberine alkaloids, berberine, coptisine, epiberberine, palmatine and berberastine in thirty-nine specimens of extracts from Japanese, Chinese and other Coptis Rhizome samples, was performed by means of a TLC-DM zigzag scanning system and the use of the TLC solvent system, Bz.-AcOEt-n-PrOH-MeOH-NH_2Et for development. Difference observed in the content of individual alkaloids in various Coptis Rhizome samples was reported in reference to the origins of those samples.
