We propose a delayed lattice reduction algorithm for IEEE 802.11n system. Lattice reduction algorithms are iterative in nature that results in long latency. In high throughput systems like 802.11n, long latency algorithms are undesired because parallelized architecture as well as buffering results in high hardware complexity. In this paper, we show that lattice reduction aided MIMO detection can be delayed for as much as 15ms with negligible effect on performance. Hence, in our proposal, the unimodular matrix computed from the channel estimation of one packet is computed with greatly relaxed timing requirements and buffered until the next packet arrival where it will be applied. Due to the relaxed latency requirement, delayed LR can be designed to be both area and power efficient.
