This paper discusses development of digital coherent optical transceivers for satellite laser communications. Coherent optical modulation schemes can enable a high receiving sensitivity, transceivers with reduced mass, power needs, and equipment volume, and higher data rates as experienced for radio frequencies. These characteristics make laser communications suitable for satellite communications. We developed an optical phase modulator for binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) and coherent optical receiver including free-space optical 90-degree hybrid, automatic optical frequency control, and a 6Gbps digital processing electrical board, which can be applied for satellite communications. Communication performance is measured with BPSK at a transmission data rate of 6Gbps.
