The present article intends to show the reason why the conflict between the Spirituals and the Conventuals arose in the Franciscan Order. According to E. Troltsch and P. Sabatier, the main reason for this internal strife is that the free pious spirit of the lay brothers could not be harmonized with the clericalization of the Order. And they insisted that, while the Conventuals are the promoters of the clerialization of the order, the Spirituals are the upholders of lay religious spirit. But it seems to me that this explanation does not sufficiently clarify the real situation of the early Franciscans. The conflict between the two groups first came into the open about the time of the Council of Lyons in 1274, after the clericalization of the Order had been completed. Therefore, we must look for an another explanation. In this regard, the conflict between friars and seculars must be noted. The Franciscans had to ward off the censures of the seculars and defend their position in the hierarchical order of the Catholic Church. In order to attain this purpose they had to give a theoretical definition to their ideal poverty. This work of the systematization of their mode of life caused the controversy in the Order, not only against the seculars but among the Franciscans themselves. Secondly all the Franciscans adopted the Joachimism as the effective theoretical weapon against the seculars. But the Joachimism was double edged, in that, while it could be used to defend the Friar's position in the hierarchy, it included the elements which threatened all the hierarchical order in the Church. Therefore, although all the Franciscans adopted the Joachimism, the modes of adoption were quite different to each other. This difference in the adoption of Joachimism gave rsie to party strives among the Franciscans, namely the opposition between the Spirituals and the Conventuals.
