1. The main questions of this paper: 1) Can the intricate patterns of the hollows in the Long Men Gu Yang Grotto date back to the North Wei dynasty? 2) We can find the same patterns of lotus transformation in the period between the Dun Huang Sui dynasty and the Long Men North Wei dynasty. Do they date back to the North Wei dynasty or to the Sui dynasty? 2. Some points I have already mentioned: 1) The inscription on the Gu yang grotto dates back to the Sui dynasty rather than North Wei dynasty. 2) The picture of the story of lotuses borne from the Buddha' s footsteps is not older than the East Wei or North Qi dynasties. 3) The repairs in the Sui dynasty are mentioned in the article of Bian Zheng Lun (Repairs of one million five hundred thousand Buddha images by the Emperor Wen Di and one hundred thousand by the Emperor Yang Di). 4) The Shui quan grottoes and the Prince He nang wang. Prince Zhao (578-606) is a potential candidate. 3. New information: 1) The arabesque design of the vine can be found on some mandorlas of the Buddha images of the Gu yang grotto. Others can be found on the pedestal of the Buddha image in the Sui dynasty, Dun Huang grottoes No.209 322, the paving bricks of the palace at Chang' an in the Tang dynasty, and the mirrors decorated with both animals and vine arabesques. 2) The reparation works of Buddha images : There is an inscription of Buddha image wrote in the year 530 on the right face, and in the year 540 on the back. There is also an addition in the year 602 on the front. Therefore the intricate patterns must have been added during the repairs of the year 602. 3) There are decorated poles with lotosl which are attached at the center of them. They can be found in the period between the North Qi and Tang dynasty. 4. Conclusion The intricate patterns of the hollows in the Long Men Gu Yang grotto were probably added at the time of the repairs during the Sui dynasty. The circumstantial evidence is that the patterns of the hollows with the linked balls, medallions, and decorated poles, are all to be found in the Dun Huang Sui dynasty grottoes.
