This thesis aims to make clear a subject on the mural paintings in the ceiling of cavern 249 by considering the following four points. 1. The former theories and my hypothesis on the mural paintings The main subjects on the mural in the cavern 249 of the Dun-huang have been argued in the former theories, based on the assumption that the mural paintings show King Asura and the Chinese traditional god and goddess, Dong・wang・fu and Xi・wang・mu. However, I think that there is a possibility that the mural paintings were drawn on the authority of some Buddhist sutras about Mytrea. Therefore, I examined some of the mural paintings. 2. King Asura The figure style of a god standing in the west mural painting of the cavern 249 who has been called Asura is the same as the figure style of a god, Siva and a god, Visnu. If we assume that the god in the mural painting is standing on the top of Mt. Sumeru, it is possible that he is a great god in the Heaven. Accordingly, the god in the mural painting cannot be called King Asura who is supporting Mt. Sumeru in the sea. 3. The checkup of the mural paintings by means of the Mytrea sutras There are some correspondences between the mural paintings and the Mytrea sutras as follows. Shakamuni who is preaching the Mytrea sutra is on the left side in the mural painting and Upari who is listening to the preach is on the right side. (Fig.l) A big god who is building a Buddhist temple for Mytrea can be seen in the center of the mural painting. (Figs. 1 & 7) A Lion Seat is being produced by the Brahmans and their children in the mural painting. (Fig. 8) Jankha, who is called a king turning a Wheel, and his wife, who are both coming to the ceremony held by Mytrea, can be seen in the ceiling of the cavern 249. (Figs. 9 & 10) Five gods in Tushita heaven, four big dragons, many birds and the four Devas can be seen in the mural paintings. (Figs. 7〜10) Glass beams of a palace and four flowers which are described in the Mytrea sutras coincide with the ones in the ceiling of the cavern 249. (Fig. 14) Mytrea who has just entered the priesthood can be seen in the center of the cavern. (Fig. 1) The first ceremony held under the Pumnaga (the tree of dragon floweres) by Mytrea can be seen in the mural painting. The dhuta practice of Mahakashapa can be seen beside Mytrea in the ceremony scene. (Fig. 1) Satan can be seen on the eaves of the miniature shrine in the ceremony scene. (Fig. 1) Big Yaksha can be seen in the north wall of the cavern. (Fig. 12) The second and third ceremonies held under the Pumnaga by Mytrea can be seen in the north and south walls. (Fig. 13) 4. Contents of the teachings of Shakamuni Shakyamuni Buddha in the Mytrea sutras emphasizes to believe in Buddhism absolutely and not to throw away the faith. Moreover, in the same sutras Shakyamuni stresses to practice austerities under the guidance of Mytrea and to enter the priesthood. Accodingly, we can say that the entire cavern 249 of Dunhuang represents the magnificent faith in Mytrea.
