"History of Land Survey of Japan" describes about the mapping of ports of Hakodate, Niigata, Nanao, Tsuruga, etc. for defense in 1876 by the members of the surveying department of Ministry of Army, of which A.Jourdan was a hired teacher for surveying and mapping, belonging to the Second French Military Mission to Japan. He accompanied them for defense planning and instruction of mapping of the ports and bays for defense with the chief of the Mission, Lt. Colunel Munier. But the existence of the above-mentioned maps which were presented to the Ministry of Army of Japan is not known today in Japan. I found the copy maps of the above-mentioned maps which were sent by the Second French Military Mission to the French Government as a part of the mission activity reports, in the Archive Service Historique de I'Armee de Terre in Paris. In this paper, the port map of Tsuruga Bay (Fig.l), Fukui Prefecture, centaral Japan, is described mainly, and other port maps of Miyadzu (Fig.6), Hakodate (Fig.7), Niigata (Fig.8) and Nanao (Fig.9) are mentioned briefly. The port map of Tsuruga Bay was drawn on semi-transparent Japanese paper (Washi) manually in four colors in 1/18,000 scale originally, and its dimension is approximately 60cm by 45cm. The to-pography along the coast is shown with hachure in detail in black. Because of its similarity in the coast-line with the Tsuruga-Obama sheet (Fig.4) of the Ino Large Map(1/36,000), it proved that the port map of Tsuruga Bay was drawn referencing the latter for its base map and the topographic expression was added with hachure on land and with bathymetric data under water.
