The author measured the charged strength (absolute strength) and the elongation of a single hair at the root part of the hair-shaft by means of L. Schopper's Yarn tester (capacity 5Kg.). The test objects were normal hair of the head of 104 male cases (varying from 2 to 73 years of age) and 132 female cases (from 1 to 62 years of age), normal pubic hair of 100 male cases (from 1 to 62 years of age) and 101 female cases (from 18 to 72 years of age). Twenty hairs were got from each case and they were all measured. The length of the test pieces adopted by the author was 3mm. Each test piece was rubbed slightly with a piece of wadding soaked in an alcohol-ether mixture and was made nearly free of greasiness and dustiness. Assuming the cross section of a hair to be an ellipse, the author determined the area of a cross section by the following formula: A=a.bπ/4 where A means area of cross section in μ^2 a and b mean respectively major axis and minor axis in μ these measurements were taken with Schopper's micrometer. The strength of a unit area, that is, the stress of a hair was calculated according to the following formula: - ψ=1000P/A where ψ means stress in Kg/mm^2 P means absolute strength in g A means of cross section in μ^2 The results were as follows: 1) The averages of the measurements are given in the following table. 2) a) As for the absolute strength of the hair, the hair of the head of the males was found to be stronger than that of the females, whereas in the case of the pubic hair the females had slightly stronger hair. In both sexes the absolute strength of the pubic hair was greater than that of the hair of the head. b) With regard to the area of the hair of the head, the males surpassed the females, but for the pubic hair, the contrary held good. In both sexes the area of the pubic hair was greater than that of the hair of the head. c) The stress of the hair of head in the males was greater than in the females, wheras that of the pubic hair in the males was smaller than in the females. The stress of the pubic hair was greater than that of the hair of the head. d) The elongation percentage of the hair of the head in the males was greater than in the females, and that of the pubic hair in the males a little larger than in the females. The elongation percentage of the pubic hair was larger than that of the hair of the head. 3) The absolute strength and area of the hair were small in early age (from 1 to 9 years), large in adult (from 19 to 40 years) becoming small, again-but not so small as in early age-in old ages (after 50). The stress, except in the case of the male pubic hair, seemed to increase with age, and the elongation percentage seemed to decrease in old age. 4) There seemed to exist some connection between the tint, curliness and length of the pubic hair. 5) The straight hair was much stronger in every respect than the very curly hair.
