We have already reported that oxidation in the organism is disturbed when the function of the R.E.S. is interfered with, having found in our former experiment that when the R.E.S. is "Blocked" by injecting a large amount of Indian ink into the veins, this has a definite influence upon the amount of acetaldehyd and of total acetone in the blood. It is clear from the investigations made by many authorities that the function of the R.E.S. has a definite connection with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and albumen, and with the regulation of the fluids in the body, but unfortunately there are no experimental data concerning what relationshig the function of the R.E.S. may have to the metabolism of respiratory gas. The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate what influence the R.E.S. may have upon the bodily combustion. To that end, we examined the metabolism of the respiratory gas after injecting Indian ink into the veins of white rabbits. The results of the experiment may be summarized as follows: 1) (a) Gas metabolism of the adult white rabbit on the first day of fasting. O_2 consumption for every 24 hours per 1kg. body weight…40.03 ave. CO_2 discharge…36.17 ave. HO_2 discharge Calories for every 24 hours per 1 metre square of body surface…877.21 ave. (b) Gas metabolism of the white rabbit on the second day of fasting. O_2 consumption for every 24 hours per 1kg. body weight…37.13 ave. CO_2 discharge…36.27 ave. HO_2 discharge…Calories for every 24 hours per 1 metre square body surface…807.03 ave. On the first and the second day after the rabbit began to fast, the nutritive substances accumulated in the body of the rabbit were gradually becoming exhausten and its metabolism decreased to some extent. 2) When Indian ink was injected intavenously in the ratio of 3.0c.c. per 100gms. body weight, we found that both the O_2 consumption and the CO_2 discharge decreased and the moisture evacuation generally decreased; the energy metabolism in particular seemed to be growing lower than before the injection. 3) When Indian ink was injected intravenously in the ratio of 0.2c.c. per 100gms. body weight, it was found that the amount of O_2 consumption and CO_2 discharge mostly increased, and accordingly the energy metabolism also seemed to be growing higher. In short, it is evident that the rise and fall of the function of the R.E.S. has a definite influence upon the gas metabolism.
