Analysis of Light Intensity Characteristics in Semiconductor Ring Lasers

Semiconductor ring lasers are expected to function as tiny ring laser gyros, which will extend their application to mobile systems. Since light intensity is used as a signal, we need to understand light intensity characteristics of the semiconductor ring laser gyros. However, such characteristics when the gyros are rotated have not been analyzed yet. In this paper, to clarify these light intensity characteristics, the effects of backscattering, detuning, oscillation frequency difference between two counterpropagating laser modes, and motion of carriers are investigated based on the semiclassical theory. It is revealed for the first time that pulsed operations are obtained under DC bias when the two counterpropagating modes have different oscillation frequencies. In contrast, continuous-wave operations are obtained only when the two counterpropagating modes have an identical oscillation frequency or backscattering is negligibly small. Moreover, it is clearly shown that detuning and motion of carriers play important roles in determining the light intensity characteristics, in addition to backscattering. [DOI: 10.1143/JJAP.41.1400]
