• The reactions of N-acetylneuraminic acid with benzyl, allyl, and methyl halides in the presence of excess cesium carbonate gave the corresponding N-acetyl-2-О-alkyl-3,5-didcoxy-D-glycero-D-galacto-2-noneno-1,4-lactones in good yields. The structures and stereochemistry of these 1,4-lactonic sialic acid derivatives were elucidated from the infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and by X-ray crystal analysis.
