As one of a series of experimental studies designed to establish the mechanism of Si transfer in a blast furnace, carburization of iron and iron-sulfur melts by CO gas has been carried out in a temperature range of 1570-1720℃. The mechanism of carbon transfer has been proposed and the adsorption phenomena, an apparent activation energy for the reaction, 2CO(g)H→C+CO_2(g) and the effect of mass transfer to gas-liquid boundary layer have been considered both experimentally and theoretically.
