The solubility of carbon in Fe-C-Mn melts was determined at 1, 530±10℃ up to about Mn = 40 per cent. From the result, the following equation is obtained : 〓N^<Mn>_C = N^<Mn>_C -N_C°= 0.10N_<Mn>, where 〓N^<Mn>_C is the difference between the solubility of carbon m Fe-C N_C°and Fe-C-Mn, N^<Mn>_C being represented by mole fraction. By constructing the following electrode concentration cell, the author measured the e. m. f. corresponding to the change in manganese and carbon content at about 1, 540℃ : Fe, Mn|SiO_2, MnO, CaO, Al_2O_3 MgO|Fe, C, Mn. Fe-Mn binary melts obey Raoult's law but Fe-C-Mn melts gradually show negative deviation from that law on the addition of carbon, and the effect of carbon on the activity coefficient of manganese was discussed by using interaction parameter γ^C_<Mn>. In addition, the effect of manganese on the activity coefficient of carbon was also discussed.
