Two-choice discrimination and discrimination reversal learning performances in 20 Down syndrome and 20 nonretarded children of comparable mental age (MA) level were compared. The results showed that Down syndrome children had more difficulty in both initial and reversal learning as compared with nonretarded ones. In shift of learning types from initial to reversal discrimination, Down syndrome children differed from nonretarded ones. The results were taken to be due to deficiency of dimensional mediating functioning and to learn on the basis of immediate association between a single correct cue and overt choice response.
