In order to examine the Lewinian study of ridigity in the mentally retarded children, recent experimental studies on discrimination-shift learning were reviewed. In fact, it seems possible to introduce the discrimination reversal-shift task into the study of rigidity. The findings in the reversal-shift studies were summarized as follows: (a) When MA controlled, the reversal-shift in the mentally retarded children was found more difficult than that in the normal children. (b) It was found that the reversal-shift was become easy as a function of MA level. (c) The frequency of perseverative response in the mentally retarded children was tended to greater than that in the normal children. From these experimental data, the mentally retarded children were interpreted as indicating greater rigidity as compared with the normal children. It was also suggested that rigidity in the mentally retarded children was decreased as a function of MA level.
