A Brief Review of the Tertiary Mammals from Korean Peninsula(Part Two Natural History Studies)

Tertiary mammalian fossils have been known only from two areas in the Korean Peninsula so far: Pongsan (Hosan in Japanese) Coalfield thought to be the Late Eocene, and Myongchon (Meisen) Coalfield thought to be the Middle Miocene. Although some of the specimens were kept and are existing in Japanese universities, present review is based mainly on the literature. The fauna from the Pongsan Coalfield (Pongsan Group) consists of five perissodactyls and one mesonychid: Protitan? koreanucum (Takai, 1939); Plesiocolopirus? grangeri (Tokunaga, 1933); Colodon hodosimai Takai, 1939; Caenolophus? makii (Tokunaga, 1926); Rhinocerotoidea fam. indet.; Harpagolestes? koreanicus (Shikama, 1943). Because of the poor preservation of the fossils and poor illustrations of original papers, most the generic identifications are questionable. The geologic age is, therefore, also ambiguous, but is best estimated the Late Eocene. The mammalian fauna from the Myongchon Coalfield (Myongchon Group) consists of a cetacean and a gomphotherid proboscidean: Cetacea fam. indet. and Gomphotherium annectens (Matsumoto, 1925). The latter species is known from the Kani Formation of Mizunami Group in Japan, and it is one of the oldest proboscideans outside Africa, indicating MN 4 Zone of European Land Mammal Zones, which is correlated with the late Early Miocene, about 17-18 Ma.
