Although no vertebrate fossil has been found in the Paleozoic strata, a variety of vertebrate faunas have been discovered in the entirely fluvio-lacustrine Mesozoic sediments, mainly Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup. Specimens include fish, turtle, crocodilian, pterosaur, and dinosaur bones, and dinosaur eggs in nests, as well as dinosaur and bird footprints. Except for articulated fish skeletons, they are isolated teeth and incomplete or fragmentary bones. Only some of collected specimens have been published and registered in institutes: 17 albuloid fish skeletons, three theropod dinosaur teeth, six sauropod dinosaur teeth and one incomplete humerus, and three pterodactyloid pterosaur teeth and an incomplete wing-phalanx. The Jinju and Hasandong Formations have produced the most abundant fish and dinosaur remains from the Gyeongsang Supergroup, respectively. Dinosaur eggs recently discovered in Hwaseong and Goseong coastal areas are still on the ground unexcavated. In addition, a hundred of fish fossils and remains of turtles and whales have been collected from Tertiary basins, which are distributed along the eastern coast. Among them, only two costal plates and one neural plate of a trionychoid turtle from the Miocene Dogokdong Formation and 12 isolated cyprinid pharyngeal teeth were published and registered in institutes. Korean vertebrate faunas remain inadequately published and stored unsystematically. The Cultural Properties Ministration needs to develop an integrated network system for managing these fossils effectively because fossils are treated as natural treasures and protected by law in South Korea.
