We investigated the incidence of postoperative hypertension following radical neck dissection in 117 consecutive patients (94 males and 23 females). The overall incidence of postoperative hypertension (blood pressure>160/90mmHg) after radical neck dissection was 44.4%. Even in preoperatively normotensive patients, postoperative hypertension occurred in 40% and severe hypertension (systolic blood pressure>180mmHg or diastolic blood pressure>110mmHg) occurred in 16.5%. These results suggested that radical neck dissection was a surgical procedure that increases the risk of postoperative hypertension. Denervation of baroreceptors may be the cause of this hypertension.
