The Hematology Service of the Tokai University Hospital Clinical Laboratory receives about 400 samples of blood per day and differential white blood cell counts are requested for about 55% of these samples. Half of these are on samples from outpatients for screening and the rest are from inpatients who have been tested previously during hospitalization. Since July of 1976, "an automated system" of leukocyte differential counting consisting of an electronic screening instrument, known as HEMATRAK has been under evaluation at the Tokai University Hospital Clinical Laboratory. During this period, the investigators studied the reproducibility of data generated by Hematrak as well as its ability to identify normal and detect abnormal cells. The following report summarizes the results of this study, which reflects the capability of the instrument to perform its designed function as a screening system for routine hematology.
