In order to estimate the minimal number of samples in experiments on reproduction, mammary gland growth and endocrine organ weights of mice, 5, 10 and 15 data were randomly sampled five times each from the parameter populations and the difference in the mean value of each parameter was examined between groups with the same and the different sample sizes in SHN, SLN, C3H/He and GRS/A. The results show that a sample size of 10 is generally sufficient for most of the parameters examined. However, the difference between strains as well as between parameters was seen in the sufficient sample sizes. This study stresses the importance of considering a priori minimal sample sizes in order to avoid the unnecessary sacrifice of animals and to increase the efficiency of animal experiments and it provides a simple method for estimating the number of samples necessary for each experiment.
