The differences between sexes in the long-term effects of neonatal administration of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on body growth and circulating levels of growth hormone (GH) and prolactin were studied in SHN mice. Body weights at adult were higher in the MSG-treated mice than in the control in both sexes, however, the difference from the control was much more marked in the females. MSG treatment decreased plasma GH, but not prolactin in the female mice. On the other hand, in the males, prolactin was affected, but GH was little by MSG. The effects of MSG was generally severer in the females than in the males.
