High-Resolution Electron Microscopy of Decagonal Quasicrystals((B)Quasicrystals)

Structures of decagonal quasicrystals, in rapidly solidified Al_<80>Mn_<20> and Al_<75>Ni_<10>Fe_<15> alloys, and conventionally solidified Al_<65>Cu_<15>Co_<20> and Al_<70>Ni_<15>Co_<15> alloys, have been examined by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. The structure of a highly ordered decagonal quasicrystal with long-range correlations, which is formed in the Al-Cu-Co and Al-Ni-Co quenched from 800℃, is interpreted by a pentagonal tiling of atom clusters. The Al-Mn, and Al-Cu-Co and Al-Ni-Co annealed at 550℃, show broad diffraction patterns indicating less long-range correlations, and their high-resolution images represent rhombic tilings, with partially translational arrangements, of atom clusters.
