A Large Dodecahedral Cluster Containing about 480 Atoms in a 2/1 Cubic Crystalline Approximant

A dodecahedral atorn cltrster, which is the largest ?rtoun cltrster with icosahedral sytnunetryfound in crystalline alloy phases, was observed in the ctrbic crystalline phase of /V-(AlPd1VInSi), re-ferred to as a 2 /l approximant of 2111 icosahedral qtrasicrystal, with 21 lattice constant of' 2.0211 nrn.The large dodecahedral cltrster has a dianaeter of abotrt 2.6 nun and contains abotrt 480 atonns.The atounic arrangement of the dodecahedral cluster is divided into atonaic shells with icosahe-dral syraarnetry, and most of the atonas in the shells are located at special positions associatedwitla the golden rnean in the three-dimensional Penrose lattice. A srnall icosalaedral atouaa clttster,formed with twelve Al atorns at the vertices and 21, Pd atotaa at the center, is located at eachvertex of a dodecahedral shell with a diatneter of' abotrt 2 nun. The larrge dodecahedral atonacltrster is considered to be an important cltrster for understanding the strttcture of an Al -Pd -Nlnicosahedral qtrasicrystal.
