Effects of Cold Working and Heat Treatment on the Magnetic Properties of Nickel Sheets

Pure nickel sheets of about 50 microns in thickness are cold rolled to varied degrees of reduction up to 77 per cent and the magnetic properties are measured by means of a torsion magnetometer in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the roll direction before and after the heat treatments at temperatures below and above the recrystallization temperature. Anisotropies are found for all magnetic properties, the magnetic properties and their anisotropies varying somewhat regularly with the reduction in thickness by cold rolling. The annealing at a temperature below the recrystallization temperature increases the value of the initial susceptibility and its anisotropy of the cold rolled specimen. The variations in the initial susceptibility and coercive force are discussed in terms of fibre structure and internal stress.
