It has been found that respiratory rhythm coincides with rhythmical movement, which is called locomotor respiratory coupling (LRC). However, to date no study has evaluated the physiological significance of LRC. The aim of the following study was to investigate the relationship between exercise capacity and the rate of LRC during pedaling. Seven healthy males (age; 24 〓 4 yrs.) volunteered for this study. VO2max and ventilatory threshold (VT) were obtained by maximum working test using a cycle ergometer. Exercise lasted for 3 min at intensities of 50%, 80%, 100%, 120% and 150% of VT. Pedaling rhythm, respiratory flow, electromyogram of vastus medialis and biceps femoris, and oxygen uptake were recorded, and LRC was calculated by synchronizing these data. One-way ANOVA and Pearson correlation were used for statistical analysis. The start of expiration was synchronized with the beginning of biceps femoris contraction at the top of the pedaling cycle in nearly all cases. Rates of LRC were 26.2%, 43.2%, 55.9%, 32.8% and 26.2% at VT levels of 50%, 80%, 100%, 120% and 150%, respectively. Seven entrainment patterns (5:1, 5:2, 4:1, 3:1, 3:2, 2:1, and 1:1) were observed as exercise intensity was increased. There was a significant correlation between 100% VT load (an index of aerobic exercise capacity) and the rate of LRC and between VO_2/VE (an index of ventilatory efficiency) and the rate of LRC. The results suggest that LRC improves aerobic exercise capacity and ventilatory efficiency during exercise.
