This is a preliminary report on the freshwater fish in the Iki and Tsushima areas. The fauna in these areas is poor on the whole, but during our study a remarkable faunal difference between the two districts was noticed. The major components of the Tsushima fauna are Plecoglossus altivelis, Tribolodon hakonensis and Moroco jouyi; they are fast swimmers and inhabitants of mountain streams or running waters. The Iki fauna, on the other hand, is represented by Odontobutis obscurus, Acheilognathus limbata and other small minnows; they are rather slow swimmers and their habitat is limited to lowlands or rather to slow currents and swamps. This difference in habitat of the two groups reflects different modes of their life. Besides the above-mentioned two groups there are some other components existent in both the areas, as follows : 1. Crucian carps and Misgurnus anguillicaudatus are distributed widely and occur commonly. However, they are also found everywhere throughout the Japanese Islands. 2. Oryzias latips and many representatives of gobies are commonly found. However, they are very often bound strongly to the sea waters and the fauna stock of these districts may have been supplied from other areas through the oceanic currents, as is the case with Anguilla japonica. In addition to the brief description of each species, the author attempted a short review on the origin and the differentiation of the contrasting fish faunas of Iki and Tsushima. The author considers that the differentiation may be explained by the destruction of the ecologic environment. During the destruction, the ecologic environment of these islands became simple as seen today, though the fauna in the lowland of Iki may reflect a connection with Kyushu until recent times.
