The fossil insects discovered from the Early Miocence Masaragawa Formation at Seki, Sado Island have been identified as listed in Table 1. Most of them belong to the large families comprising a great number of genera and species. A single bibionid fly represented by a number of specimens is referred to a new species; the other specimens are identifiable only at the generic level or even higher taxonomic level due to the scarcity of the specimens and their poor preservation. The living insects corresponding to those fossils are usually found in the open forests of mountaneous regions in Central Japan. The fossil insect fauna of Seki is allied to the fauna in deciduous broad-leaved tree forests in the temperate zone of East Asia. This faunal inference coincides with the climatic condition inferred from the Early Miocene floras in Japan which is called the Aniai Flora. The insect fauna accompanied with the Aniai Flora is described in the present paper for the first time except for that of Demura in Fukui. The fossil flora had changed in a subtropical one, the Daijima Flora, in the Middle Miocene. The insect faunas in Japan at this age give more tropical appearance than the fossil flora. In the Late Miocene the temperate flora recovered in Japan. The temperate insect fauna also returned, but it included some exotic species relating to the living species inhabiting Southern and Western China and Himalayan district. It is interesting that the Early Miocene insect fauna seems to be much more alike to that of the present time than that of the Late Miocene.
