Measurement of molecular conformation and motion in two kinds of polymer-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal displays showing thresholdless switching (V-mode PS-FLCDs) has been carried out with the objective of distinguishing molecular conformation and switching between two types of V-mode PS-FLCDS. Based on the results of molecular conformation under quiescent condition and motion under applied voltage, the different mechanisms of the thresholdless electrooptic characteristics of two types of V-mode PS-FLCDs are discussed. In addition, the reduction of the operation voltage of V-mode PS-FLCD (I) from V-mode PS-FLCD (II) has been explained.
