Initial Growth Process of Barrier Discharge in Atmospheric Pressure Helium for Glow Discharge Formation

Barrier discharge in atmospheric pressure helium is simulated to study the radial growth process from an electron avalanche to glow discharge formation. We found that the discharge growth process depends on volume electron density. At the beginning of the discharge, electron density gradually increases by moderate ionization at low E/N. During this phase, electron diffusion I induces the growth of the discharge area. After the electron density exceeds 10^<11> cm^<-3>, the radial electric field generated by the surface charge on the dielectric electrode enhances the discharge growth by increasing the electron density in the radial direction.
