In many industrial plants such as nuclear power plants, thermal power plants, chemical plants or food producing plants, various kinds of cylindrical shell structures are found and utilized. LNG tanks, coolant water tanks, reactor vessels, wine tanks are the typical examples for them. Most of these cylindrical structures are settled on the foundations, and these structures are subjected to very large seismic loadings due to earthquakes. Therefore, various kinds of structural damages, such as collapse, buckling or over turning, are caused for these 50 years. In the Hyogo-ken Nambu earthquake occurred in 1995, many cylindrical structures were also collapsed or buckled. Moreover, much larger earthquakes are afraid to occur in the near future. Thus, from the view point of the disaster prevention, the development of more accurate dynamic buckling evaluation technologies become more and more important as a design tool. In this report, the numerical simulation methodology on the dynamic buckling of the thin cylindrical shell structures due to earthquakes are introduced, and the influences of static liquid pressure on vibration characteristics and dynamic buckling phenomena are evaluated.
