Soft-X-Ray Emission from 1 μm Laser-Irradiated Cannonball Target

We observed 0.2-1.56 keV X-ray radiant spectra from 1.052 μm laser-irradiated cannonball and glass microballoon targets using a seven-channel X-ray diode array. The Au-coated cannonball and a laser pulse of 500 ps increased the radiation to a level more closely approaching Planck radiation than did the glass microballoon and a 100 ps laser pulse. Increasing laser intensity decreased the radiation conversion efficiency. The tamper- and cavity-plasma opacity to the radiation is also discussed.
