The effect of oxidizing and reducing atmospheres (Ar and NF_3) on the valency states of several 3d transition metals (Cu, Cr, Mn, Ni and Co) in fluoride glasses and on their absorption losses have been investigated. NF_3 atmosphere processing reduces the absorption loss due to chromium ions, but increases the loss due to copper ions.
