Direct Synthesis of Trans Polyacetylene Films with Conjugated System of Long Average Length and Narrow Distribution

A trans polyacetylene film was synthesized directly to reduce defects induced by ordinary thermoisomerization. Polymerization was carried out at high temperatures or by use of a different catalyst system. The films synthesized by both methods contain a larger amount of trans segments. From reflection spectra, they show a narrower peak at a lower energy than that observed in the ordinary thermoisomerized film. This implies that the films have conjugated systems of long average length and narrow distribution. A decrease in polymerization rate was found to be effective for the direct synthesis of such a trans polyacetylene film.
