We have developed a new method to measure confinement time, τ, of trapped ions in a toroidal RF trap. An electron beam which creates Ar ions in the RF trap is modulated sinusoidally with angular frequency ω_0. The total number, N, of the confined ions is modulated with phase delay φ of the electron beam current I_B. τ is derived from φ using the relation, τ = (1/ω_0)tanφ. This new method of τ measurement has the advantage of less disturbance of ion confinement because the synchronous detection of φ at ω_0 can minimize the modulation amplitude of I_B.
